PWDA played an ongoing important role in the development of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) between 2004 to 2006 by organising national consultations, consultations with members, attending sessions of the UN Ad Hoc Committee and supporting delegates to attend sessions of the UN Ad Hoc Committee.

PWDA is part of the NGO CRPD Shadow Report Project Group, made up of leading disability and human rights organisations, to provide an NGO perspective on Australia's implementation of the Convention. This Project Group receives significant pro bono support from DLA Phillips Fox and has undertaken consultations throughout Australia with the support of the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA).
Representatives from the Australian Civil Society Parallel Report Group attend the 9th Session of the Committee to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in Geneva, Switzerland, 15–19 April 2013.
